Cracking Down on Cockroaches – Reasons to Control & Top Tips to Prevent a Infestation

Cockroaches have been around for 320 million years, making them one of the oldest insects on the planet. They’ve adapted and survived through countless changes, making them extremely resilient insects.

Often sneaking into our premises through cracks, drains, and vents, these robust creatures can survive in the most extreme conditions, making them one of the toughest pests to eradicate.

Cockroaches are opportunistic feeders with an omnivorous diet, meaning they are not selective and will consume virtually anything available to them — this includes waste, faecal matter, and even fellow cockroaches!

This behaviour of cannibalism is believed to be a self-regulating mechanism to control their population size, especially during times of food scarcity and overpopulation. When pushed to extremes, they resort to consuming each other to sustain themselves.

To thrive, these insects seek out hidden retreats situated close to sources of food and water — usually concealed in the obscure corners, crevices, and alcoves of a structure. While they have impressive endurance to withstand prolonged periods without food, surviving for several months, they cannot go for more than a few days without water.

Reasons to Control Cockroaches – Problems they can cause:

  • Health Hazards – Cockroaches can contaminate food sources, utensils, and surfaces, leading to the spread of diseases and the potential to trigger allergic reactions. Cockroaches carry a host of bacteria, which can cause salmonella, staphylococcus and streptococcus.
  • Reputational Damage – For businesses, the presence of a cockroach infestation can tarnish your reputation, deterring customers and affecting your profits.
  • Unpleasant Smell: Cockroaches emit a disagreeable, musty odour that can infiltrate and linger on objects they encounter, making living or working environments uncomfortable.
  • Psychological Distress: The mere sight of cockroaches can induce feelings of fear, disgust, stress and anxiety, compromising the comfort of a home or business.

Top Tips to Prevent a Cockroach Infestation:

  • Cleanliness – Maintain a high level of hygiene, clearing up crumbs and ensuring rubbish bins are sealed and emptied regularly.
  • Seal Entry Points – Routinely check and secure possible entryways, including sealing cracks and crevices and closing windows and doors.
  • Secure Food Sources – Store food in airtight containers, and do not leave pet food out overnight.
  • Eliminate Water Sources – Avoid letting water accumulate and stagnate (e.g. house plant, under sinks, or in fridges), and fix any leaking pipework.
